As a little girl, I loved to read. My parents encouraged my love of books by taking me to the library to select books I enjoyed and by allowing me to buy books with records that I could play and read along to. I remember sitting in my room for hours reading along to Casper the Friendly Ghost, Curious George and many fairytales. For me, books were an escape from boredom and allowed me to use my imagination.
When I had my own children, I assumed that they would love reading just as much as me. From the beginning I had books in the house, I read to them, I showed them pictures and did what all the parenting experts told me to do. They always enjoyed it when I read to them and they still do. What I wasn’t expecting was for them to protest doing their school home reading. From JK it was a battle to get them to do their home reading. They didn’t seem interested in the books that were coming home from school. It was a struggle. As someone who reads and writes, it was difficult for me to accept that my children were not going to enjoy the benefits of reading. I set out to find a way to encourage them to enjoy reading. Fortunately, their Dad and I are both readers and model reading to them on a regular basis.
My children are 7 and 9 and are now reading very regularly. Here are some tips to foster the love of reading in your children:
1. Start from birth! Cuddling and reading to baby is the beginning of early literacy but is also a time to bond and connect with your little one. There are great benefits to baby’s brain development as well. Reading to your baby will build vocabulary, stimulate imagination and improve communication skills. Plus, reading on a daily basis makes it part of baby’s routine and a great habit to build into their daily routine.
2. As your child grows, allow them to select books with topics that appeal to them. Whether it is comic books, cook books, or graphic novels, it is a way for them to practice their reading and use their imagination.
3. Use newspapers, blogs, and magazines. Reading doesn’t always have to come from a book. You can encourage them to read magazines that interest them, blogs or even the comic section of the newspaper.
4. Ask questions. Ask them questions about what they’ve read. Talk about alternate endings to a story.
5. Write stories as a family. One way to encourage their love of reading and writing is by doing a family story. Each family member takes turns writing the next sentence in the story. It makes for a lot of fun and laughs and creates a bonding opportunity for the family while practicing literacy in a fun way.
6. Don’t be pushy. Nagging or explaining why it is important to read is the equivalent of explaining why they need to take vitamins. Find ways to make reading fun and not a chore. Use themed books surrounding certain seasons. Visit the library regularly or make a visit to a book store and allow them to book their own book to purchase as a special treat.
I often enjoy looking at our library of books. We have books that I bought based on my love of stories but as my boys get older our library has expanded to comic books, Minecraft How-to’s, joke books, science books, Lego and Star Wars! Regardless of what they’re reading, there is nothing that makes me smile more than seeing them curled up on their bed reading a book!

The YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford has set up a Co-Parenting workshop with Gary Direnfeld, a reputable social worker and host of the TV show Newly Wed, Nearly Dead. The workshop will focus on the challenges of raising a child between more than one household. It is being held on Tuesday April 9, 2013 from 7-8:30pm at the YMCA Immigrant Settlement Services office located at 38 Darling Street – Suite 201. This workshop is open to all members of the community, free of charge. Families register with Christina Wood 905-317-4907 or christina_wood@ymca.ca and let her know how many people will be attending including any children as we will offer free child care services to those families for the duration of the workshop. Spaces are limited.

Finding quality childcare is one of the greatest concerns families have in today’s society. CBC’s Marketplace aired an investigative TV show called “Who’s Watching the Kids?” on February 22, 2013 that explored the issue of childcare in Canada. As a current student studying early childhood education (ECE), I was shocked at some of the findings in this report and the need in Canada for more licensed day care spaces. This investigation can also help to make parents more aware of questions to ask their child-care centre or providers. Follow the link below for the full report.

Tip Sheet
(from http://www.cbc.ca/marketplace/episodes/2013/02/tip-sheet-8.html )
- Are you licensed? If yes, make sure to see the license, and that it is up-to-date.
- Do you have CPR/ First Aid Training? Ask to see the certificates, and make sure that they are up-to-date.
- Can I have references from both current and past parents? Make sure to check them.
- Are you insured? Accidents do happen; be sure that the provider has liability coverage in case of accidents.
- Can you provide criminal background checks for yourself and anyone else who will be in contact with the children? Make sure you see the records for yourself.
- Who else lives in the home and may have access to the child(ren)? Ask for criminal background checks for all people over 18 who live in the home.
- How many children are cared for at the location, at any time? Each province has different laws regarding the number of children allowed; check your province’s legislation.
-
- What is your educational training and experience with children?
- What are the ages of the children being cared for? Younger children and infants require more supervision.
- Make sure the sleeping arrangements are safe, clean, and well-maintained, with ready exits in case of fire.
- Make sure that children are transported in appropriate car seats or booster seats at all times.
- Ask to see the play areas, and make sure areas and toys are safe, clean, and well-maintained.
- Make sure the daycare has procedures in case of illness, fire and accidents.
- Make sure the daycare has and follows a strict protocol of distributing medication.
- Make sure there are policies to manage food allergies.
- Make sure that cleaning materials, household chemicals, and plastic bags are stored out-of-reach of the children.
- Is there a safe, fenced-in yard? Are there baby gates on the stairs, and covers on the electrical outlets?
- Do you have a swimming pool? If yes, what precautions do you take to ensure the safety of children in care?
- Can you tell me how playdates are managed and organized, and how you inform parents and get their permission? Make sure the playdates are legal and safe – combining children from different unlicensed daycares into one private location exceeding the allowable limit is illegal in some provinces, including Ontario.
- Is there evidence of cigarette smoke in the home?
- If you are unavailable, will you tell me in advance when my child is being cared for by another person? Make sure that person also provides you with a police record check and references.

Homework time can easily become stressful for many parents and children. Kidshealth.org has created a Top 10 Homework Tips article that offers simple ideas to keep homework time effective.
Kids are more successful in school when parents take an active interest in their homework — it shows kids that what they do is important.
Of course, helping with homework shouldn’t mean spending hours hunched over a desk. Parents can be supportive by demonstrating study and organization skills, explaining a tricky problem, or just encouraging kids to take a break. And who knows? Parents might even learn a thing or two!
Here are some tips to guide the way:
- Know the teachers — and what they’re looking for. Attend school events, such as parent-teacher conferences, to meet your child’s teachers. Ask about their homework policies and how you should be involved.
- Set up a homework-friendly area. Make sure kids have a well-lit place to complete homework. Keep supplies — paper, pencils, glue, scissors — within reach.
- Schedule a regular study time. Some kids work best in the afternoon, following a snack and play period; others may prefer to wait until after dinner.
- Help them make a plan. On heavy homework nights or when there’s an especially hefty assignment to tackle, encourage your child break up the work into manageable chunks. Create a work schedule for the night if necessary — and take time for a 15-minute break every hour, if possible.
- Keep distractions to a minimum. This means no TV, loud music, or phone calls. (Occasionally, though, a phone call to a classmate about an assignment can be helpful.)
