Storybook Breakfast 2023 – A Magical Event!

Storybook Breakfast 2023 was a grand success! We are so thankful to have welcomed close to 500 guests through the doors of the Hellenic Community Centre to enjoy a fantastic breakfast and interactions with close to 50 different storybook characters.

We are happy to report that we also raised $31,600 for Kids Can Fly through event sponsorships! This money goes right back into our operations and helps us to run our many high-impact programs including: the Launchpad, Parachute Program, Prenatal classes, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, the annual ECE Awards Celebration, Roots of Empathy, and more

This event is so unique because it is just as much a fundraiser as it is a community impact event. Based on the rave reviews we received in our feedback survey and the smiling faces of so many children and their parents, we know it did what we hoped it would.

This year’s theme was “Imagination,” and we had a variety of “Imagination Stations” throughout the banquet hall, showing off different classic story themes. Characters from those stories stayed nearby, and it was a fantastic opportunity for guests to get autographs from their favourite characters, and countless photos were taken with the beautiful back drops.

Our Glass Slipper sponsors, Margot & Paul Williamson and the James F. Boughner Foundation, are a critical part of making this event happen, but we are also thankful to the rest of our sponsors:

We also had some amazing in-kind donations from Longo’s Ancaster, Leigh Dubay Graphic Design, the Brantford Expositor, Spence Print Solutions, Digital Duck Inc., Hellenic Community Centre, R & J Theatrics, Triple Arts Academy, and Edge Imaging.

Events like these take many people working together. We had nearly 100 volunteers helping, doing everything from being part of the planning committee to dressing up as characters or serving food! Thank you so much to our wonderful volunteers. We appreciate you all very much!

This was the 16th year of this event. Each year, the event brings in new young children who are just so open to the wonder of an opportunity like this. We got to hear the excited yells and cheers as children met characters they never expected to meet in real life.

Everywhere we looked, we could see smiling faces, discussing the unique centrepieces at each table (each table had its own storybook theme), pointing at the various characters they still wanted to meet, chatting with characters as they signed the children’s autograph books, and munching on the delicious food prepared by Marschal Giles Catering and Buffet services.

It was a truly fabulous day. It was our first time running this event at the Hellenic Community Centre, but despite it being a tad smaller than our previous venue, it was just wonderful to be back in person after two years of the “Picnic” version of Storybook Breakfast due to the pandemic.

A wonderful time was had by all.

Knock knock, who’s there?!

Look outside!  It’s your favourite Storybook Breakfast characters coming to your house!

Our 14th Storybook Breakfast was a different one this year! With the social distancing protocols currently in
place, we had to be extra creative to find a way to create the fun and magic of this annual event in a safe
and responsible way. Our virtual event included distanced porch drop offs by beloved characters followed
by a virtual session with local author Werner Zimmerman who engaged the kids in fun and creativity.

Our volunteers have always been one of the main reasons this event is a huge success and this year was no
exception! They worked hard this year planning and dressing up to do deliveries. They brought the magic to the children just as they always do!

The joy and excitement that poured in the morning of the event affirmed that this was the perfect plan!

We are thrilled to announce that this event raised almost $25,000 for Kids Can Fly!

These funds will go directly into the work we do for children and families in the communities of Brantford and Brant.

Thank you to Longo’s Ancaster and Tim Horton’s Foundation camps for the donation of the food, to Findlay Law for the gift bags and containers and to Sylvan Learning Brantford for providing the books.

Thank you to Digital Duck for making this event virtual for us, and for all the work you put in behind the scenes to make this happen and to Leigh Dubay Graphic Design for creating the program this year.

And a huge thank you to all of our many sponsors!!  Many sponsors return year after year, and some are brand new.  We appreciate every single one of you and are so thankful for your support.

We don’t know what it will look like yet….but whether it is a breakfast or a picnic, we can’t wait for the 15th SBB in 2022!!

“Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened” -Dr Seuss

This year at our 13th annual Storybook Breakfast, we paid tribute to the great Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss) as there are very few names that are as synonymous with children’s storybooks as his!

Our amazing and talented stage decorators had a lot of fun and really made the stage come to life with fun characters and captured the essence of Dr Seuss and as always, each table had a unique storybook theme!

Some favourite Dr Seuss characters came to life!

Our dedicated kitchen volunteers made sure that everyone enjoyed a delicious hot breakfast and the fruit donation from Longo’s Ancaster made it even better this year!

Our favourite part is always seeing the magic on the children’s faces and all of the great costumes!

None of this would be possible without a team of dedicated volunteers who work behind the scenes and on the day of to make sure that this event is magical and runs smoothly every year!

This year’s event raised over $30,000 that will go directly towards the programs we run for the communities of Brantford and Brant County!  We would like to thank every sponsor who was so generous and supported Storybook Breakfast 2020!
