Crystal Johnson’s life took a joyful turn when she discovered she was expecting her first child. “I was happy but also nervous. I didn’t know what to expect,” she recalls, perfectly capturing the whirlwind of emotions that often accompanies pregnancy.
For Crystal, the excitement was tinged with concern, especially given her history with depression and mental health issues in her family. She wanted to be proactive in preparing for motherhood, particularly when it came to mental wellness. That’s when she learned about the Prenatal Program offered by Kids Can Fly—a resource designed to equip expectant mothers with the tools they need for a healthy pregnancy and postpartum experience.
“I found the program to be excellent,” Crystal remembers fondly. “The material was laid out very well, and they even provided a free meal.” The supportive environment, led by knowledgeable facilitators Jane Flinders, E.C.E., and Sarah Watson, licensed doula, helped her feel more at ease. “With their help, I felt prepared,” she adds.
Fast forward to October 9, 2019, the day Crystal welcomed her baby boy into the world. Soon after, she began to notice some symptoms of postpartum depression. But thanks to the insights and strategies she had learned during the Prenatal Program, Crystal was ready to tackle these challenges head-on. “The program helped me to develop a plan. I was confident in my support team and reached out to my doctor right away. I ended up getting the help I needed,” she shares, emphasizing the importance of having a support network.
Crystal’s story is a powerful reminder of the reality that 1 in 5 women experience symptoms of postpartum mood disorders. While anyone can be affected, certain risk factors may increase vulnerability. If you can relate to Crystal’s experience, consider joining the Prenatal Program to prepare for this crucial time in your life.
