Celebrating our Executive Director’s 60th Birthday While Supporting Imagination Library

“If your actions create a legacy that inspires others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then, you are an excellent leader.” – Dolly Parton

When Sharon Brooks was asked how she wanted to celebrate her upcoming 60th Birthday, she came up with the idea that she wanted to celebrate in style with all of her friends and family while supporting a Kids Can Fly program that is near and dear to her heart.

In the winter, a local little girl asked her family to donate to Kids Can Fly and the Brantford Brant Imagination Library instead of buying her birthday gifts.  This inspired Sharon to do the same for her 60th Birthday and the idea of a birthday party fundraiser was born!

“It costs $60 per year for a child to receive one book per month through the Imagination Library.  I am turning 60, so having friends and family donate $60 to support a child is a perfect fit!”  The Imagination Library was founded by country singer, Dolly Parton and Kids Can Fly board members and Sharon’s family organized a Country Hoedown Fundraising Birthday Party for Sharon.

60 guests donned their cowboy hats and boots and paid $100 per couple to attend the event held on June 2.  $60 from each ticket was donated to the Imagination Library.  These donations have made it possible for Kids Can Fly to register 35 children for one year in the Imagination Library in Brant.

Guests enjoyed a display of southern hospitality with appetizers donated, prepared and served by Kids Can Fly board members and Sharon’s family.  Jason Gibson catered a delicious main course, long-time friend Diane Bartle created a candy buffet and friends of Kids Can Fly donated a variety of home-baked goods for dessert.

Local young adults volunteered their time at the event, some of which were involved in a preschool program that Sharon taught at.  It shows how much of an impact Sharon has had on the lives of many young people in our community.

Special guests flew in for the Hoedown from as far as Kenora and Calgary!

The Imagination Library is having a big impact in our community.  When parents read regularly to their children during the preschool years they’re giving them the biggest boost toward a successful education.  The Imagination Library sends a book to a child once per month until their 5th birthday.  Kids Can Fly fundraises to offer the books free to families which cost $60 per child, per year.  Our major sponsors include the Rotary Sunshine Club, the Friday Rotary Club, Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Brant United Way, Brant Community Foundation, Stedman Foundation, St. George Women’s Institute, performer Leisa Way, Brantford Rotaract Club and many private donations.

Sharon and The Kids Can Fly Imagination Library Committee would like to thank everyone for making the party a success and so much fun.

Check out the gallery below.  A special thank-you to Roger Duck of Digital Duck for capturing the night’s festivities. Your continued support of Kids Can Fly is outstanding and very much appreciated!

Kids Can Fly receives Ontario Trillium Grant

Thursday, April 12, 2012

The Ontario Trillium Foundation has made a significant investment in enriching the lives of young children in Brant.  MPP Dave Levac and Larry Davis, from the Ontario Trillium Grant Review team announced that Kids Can Fly will receive a grant of 81 thousand dollars over the course of two years to fund the Imagination Library.

Imagination Library is an amazing opportunity for children to receive free books in the mail from birth to age five.  It was established by country singer Dolly Parton in 1996 and brought to Brant in 2009 by Kids Can Fly in partnership with the Rotary Club of Brantford-Sunrise.  Funding from both Rotary Clubs now allow Kids Can Fly to register about 200 children per year.

The children begin to receive quality, age appropriate books in the mail, once a month.  If a baby is registered at birth they will have received a library of 60 books when they reach their 5th birthday!

Kids Can Fly and the Brant-Brantford Roundtable on Poverty partnered to apply for this new funding.

The research on the impact of Imagination Library shows that it brings families together with parents reading more to their children and spending more time interacting.

Children who have had the benefit of Imagination Library tend to arrive at kindergarten with larger vocabularies, heighten creativity and showing excitement about learning new things. In Brant 25% of children are not ready when they start kindergarten and 28% of high-school students do not graduate.  When these students are not able to complete their schooling they are more likely to live in poverty.

The new allocation of funds from the Ontario Trillium Foundation will allow for 700 more children to participate in the program.

Kids Can Fly is continuing to raise funds for the Imagination Library and their goal is to enrol every child born in Brant in the program.  If you would like to sponsor a child for the Imagination Library click https://www.kidscanfly.ca/programs/imagination-library/
